Though many customers like the sweet &  throaty sound of an open intake 'breathing', Clint realized that DoS needs to think of everyone.  He heard firsthand from customers that there are folks who like our intake but do not necessarily want to hear the sound offered by an open, cowl fed CAI.  With that in mind, the DoS team set our sights on creating a way to give our CAI some manners.

To quiet our cold air intake, we tested several noise abatement options.  Ultimately, we decided to use a passive baffle that uses a split butterfly design. This allows the CAI to open the blades of the butterfly as engine needs demand. The action on the aluminum blades is VERY light, and we found no quantifiable losses on the dyno due to adding this baffle.

How does it work and what does it do?

The baffle blades will open via engine vaccum only after the 3500 RPM range, which is perfect for keeping noise down at low RPMs (cruise & city driving). It's a best of both worlds design that eliminates the deep "inhale" sound at low RPMs, along with very low and high range noise frequencies as you accelerate to redline.  Basically, you'll have very tame sound levels in the passenger compartment until you really open it up.

We MINI owners have a wide range of acceptable cockpit noise levels. Clint knows it's important to have options that keep SOAF (Significant Other Acceptance Factor) high. As we all know, it's good to keep our significant others happy if we want to keep our MINI performance habit alive and kicking!
